The Laboratory is equipped with sophisticated and state of art equipment to cater to the diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic needs of the patients. The laboratory plays a major role in fulfilling the needs of the research aspirants and there by contributing towards academic activities. There are about 125 technical staff and 49 Consultants. Specimens are processed by qualified and competent technical staff and reported by competent and authorized Consultants. Most of the analysers are interfaced with the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and integrated with the Hospital Information System (HIS) which enables the results to be viewed in the respective wards and other patient care areas immediately after they are released by authorized laboratory personnel. Effective internal and external quality assurance systems are in place. All the staff of the Central Laboratory undergo periodic training in order to keep themselves updated in their technical knowledge and skills. Laboratory Medicine
The Department of Laboratory Medicine was started with a goal to empower Laboratory physicians as the first point of contact, for bridging the clinicians with patients, thus helping in the effective management of patients. The Laboratory Physician will have a comprehensive knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Pathology, Haematology, Histopathology, Cytopathology, Clinical Microbiology, Immunology, Transfusion Medicine and Molecular Diagnostics including quality and ethical aspects. They also indulge in research for introducing innovations in diagnostic medicine and at the same time contribute in training undergraduate, post graduate students, laboratory technicians by demonstrating skills of teaching and assessment methodology effectively.
Faculties from the various core specialties were recruited to the department to develop an integrated approach to diagnostics. A unique post graduate teaching programme was initiated for the MD laboratory Medicine course. The MD Laboratory Medicine course is consistent with the 3-tier laboratory concept of an ideal tertiary care hospital attached to a medical college/institute. Tier I is related to the laboratory medicine department itself. Tier II encompasses specialty laboratories of Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Endocrinology and Immunology departments while tier III is the high-end research facility laboratory in the medical college hospital.

About the Department
Clinical Biochemistry Section of the Central Laboratory is equipped with sophisticated fully automated biochemistry analyzers interfaced with the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and integrated with Hospital Information System (HIS). The clinical Biochemistry section performs more than 7500- 8000 tests a day. To meet the advancing scientific demand, apart from the routine clinical chemistry and immunoassays, the section is also performs Immunoglobulin quantification, tumor markers, serum Protein electrophoresis, prenatal and neonatal screening. The laboratory uses Unity Real Time quality control data management tool to monitor its internal quality control process. The laboratory participates in Proficiency Testing programs for all test parameters in Biochemistry section with both national and international programs.

Microbiology
About the Department :
The Department of Clinical Microbiology comprises of various sections including Bacteriology, Serology, Mycobacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Parasitology and Molecular Microbiology. There are 27 technically qualified and competent staff handling more than 750 samples/ day. The final reports of the tests and assays are evaluated by 13 Senior and Junior Consultants for their correctness thereby ensuring quality of the reports released. The laboratory participates in all National Quality Assurance programs for Bacteriology, Serology, Molecular Biology, Mycology, and Parasitology. The Laboratory was one of the first few approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu and ICMR for rtPCR testing for H1N1 and SARS CoV2. The laboratory presently performs Tuberculosis and COVID 19 testing by conventional rtPCR, CBNAAT and TruNaat platforms. All the sections are equipped with “state of art:” fully automated equipments catering to the present day’s diagnostic and research needs. Most of the equipments are interfaced and integrated with hospital information system. The recently added MALDI-TOF and Flimarray techniques have ensured quality report within a short turnaround time which in turn contributes to optimal patient management instituted early for better outcomes.

Histopathology and cytology department is well equipped with state and the art instruments. The section of Histopathology and Cytology has 17 experienced consultants with the team of 17 experienced technical and non technical staff members. The department performs around 24,000 histopathology samples including Fetal autopsy and Forensic Histopathology examination and 13,000 cytology samples in a year.
We also perform Frozen sections (24 hours), Immunohistochemistry (90 markers), Immunofluorescence (9 markers), Molecular Pathology for mutations. The laboratory maintains quality related activities both internally and externally. The Histopathology EQAS is being participated with Neuberg Anand academy of Laboratory Medicine, Bangalore and Cytology EQAS with PGIMER, Chandigarh. Nephropathology and Perinatal Pathology Fellowship programs are also available.
Hematology and Clinical Pathology
Routine haematology tests form the mainstay of diagnosis and management of most of the ailments in our inpatients and outpatients. Haematology and clinical pathology section of pathology is one of the state of art laboratory catering to such need. It is equipped with high end fully automated haematology blood count analysers , coagulation analysers and automated urine analyser with automated morphological examination of urine. The laboratory provides a solid support to the haematology oncology services of the hospital with its 10 colour three laser high end flowcytometer in the prompt diagnosis and management of lymphoma , leukemia and immunodeficiency disorders. Advanced coagulation lab with platelet aggregometry helps in the diagnosis of hemophilia , platelet function disorders and monitoring of antiplatelet drugs. All the equipments and tests are handled by superior trained technologists and expert consultants who are the greatest assets to the laboratory. All tests are under the vigilant quality control activities and are accreditated by National Accreditation Organisation( NABL). About the Department
"She has her mother’s eyes and her father’s nose, Her smile a bit from both…. But does she get her genetic disorder from any one of them?"
Genetic Testing
The Genetic testing services of the Department of Human Genetics has been providing a range of investigative and counseling services for individuals and families with suspected or known hereditary (genetic) conditions since 1997. The well equipped and NABL accredited facility offers karyotyping, Fluorescent in situ Hybridization (FISH) and DNA based testing in the areas of:
- Prenatal Genetics
- Pediatric Genetics
- Adult Genetics
- Cancer Genetics (Leukemias)
- Biodosimetry (AERB accredited)
Who should contact Genetic Services?
The most common reasons for seeking help from Genetic Services include:
- Having already had a child with a hereditary (genetic) condition
- Concern when individuals in the family have unusual features or multiple birth defects which include development delay and / or intellectual disability
- A woman in her mid-30’s or older who is either planning a pregnancy or is already pregnant
- Intending parents are close relatives such as cousins
- Exposure to a potential teratogen (or medication during pregnancy) which may cause a birth defect
- History of stillbirth or greater than three miscarriages
- Unexplained male infertility
- Prenatal diagnosis for a known problem or risk
- Familial clustering of a specific cancer - particularly with two or more affected first degree relatives.
Molecular Genetics
DNA tests are an essential part of diagnostics and genetic counseling in single gene diseases Molecular Genetics testing offers DNA analysis for many genetic disorders via polymerase chain reaction, gene sequencing, targeted mutation analysis and MLPA deletion/duplication testing. Testing is available for both common and rare genetic disorders with a special interest in conditions involving intellectual disability. Prenatal diagnosis is also available for many of these disorders.
The increased demand for molecular genetic testing is accompanied by a responsibility to ensure that the technology is used appropriately. We support the responsible use of genetic testing by providing pre-and post-test support for referring clinicians. Test requests are monitored for “reason for referral” to ensure that we provide the most accurate interpretation. We are continually expanding our test offerings or partnering with genomic companies to offer a wider range of tests. Please contact us in case a test that you require is not listed.
