About the Department
The Department of Ophthalmology at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research was started in the Year 1986. It provides state of the art care in ophthalmology coupled with modern advancements and opportunities for research. The department has faculty trained in all the sub specialities of ophthalmology such as glaucoma, cornea, retina, orbit and oculoplasty, neuro-ophthalmology, paediatric ophthalmology, squint and uvea. The services provided in the sub-specialities are par excellence and surgical management in the various disciplines is also undertaken. There is a specialized eye bank with modern equipment and a well-developed hospital cornea retrieval program that aids in the transplantation of corneas through the year.
The community outreach program covers 3 major districts in Tamil Nadu and aims to provide high quality affordable care to people across the state and also eradicate the preventable causes of blindness. There are numerous opportunities for research and extensive work is being carried out in the various specialities. A special program exists to screen and treat Retinopathy of prematurity in coordination with the paediatric and neonatology department. Children with developmental delays are enrolled under KCDU scheme, where they will be followed up till 18 years of age by a dedicated multidisciplinary team. Currently the department consists of 12 faculties and 17 post graduate students and we treat approximately 30,000 patients annually.
