About the Department
The Paediatric Urology Department of SRMC was set up in 2003. Paediatric Urology deals with the surgical issues relating to the kidneys, bladder, and genital organs in children. Most of these disorders are identified in the womb, for which early parent counselling is recommended. Other cases need to be treated shortly after birth due to the complex nature of these conditions. Professional evaluation is mandatory as the ideal time for surgical correction is determined by the medical expert.
In the last 16 years, the department has grown and successfully treats numerous complex cases of patients coming to India from other countries.
High-tech laparoscopic, endoscopic, and minimally invasive surgeries for various urological problems in children are carried out including laparoscopic surgery for obstruction at the pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJO), vesicoureteric reflux (VUR), and duplication anomalies. Treatment of posterior urethral valves, ureterocele, and STING procedure is also done using cystoscopy.
Besides, major reconstructive operations, including repairs of hypospadias and epispadias, exstrophy reconstruction, and bladder augmentation, are also done in the department.
The research is a major component of our work. The department concentrates on clinical and laboratory research of paediatric urology. Among our main research directions lie the discovery of pathological markers in PUJO, the diseases of the fetal ureter and urethra, urinary indicators in children with PUJO, and the tissue-specific parameters in hypospadias.
