About the Department
The Division of Spine Surgery of SRU is located on the second floor of the B Block at the Sri Ramachandra medical Center.
This is the first spinal center started in the state of Tamil Nadu in the Teaching hospital/ Medical College in 2006
Statistics show that 85% of people will have neck or back pain at least once in their lifetime.
The Division of Spine Surgery at SRU helps patients with even complex back and neck problems to recover and return to normal activity at the earliest.
The Division of Spine Surgery at SRU has the best of specialists trained in the field of conservative and interventional spine surgery and offers complete consolidated care for spine problems both non operative as well as operative. The Division is headed by Dr. Karthik Kailash who is internationally trained (trained for ten years in USA, UK and Austria) and is a pioneer in scoliosis surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery and Endoscopic Spine Surgery The team of Spine surgeons have all international training and do the latest procedures.
It offers comprehensive care and is also in the forefront of training surgeons. The Centre is recognized by the ASIA PACIFIC ORTHOPAEDIC ASSOCIATION as one of the specialist centers for regional training in spine surgery and annually spine surgeons from all over the region visit the center for advanced training in complex spine surgery, Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and Endoscopic Spine Surgery.
Facilities at the center
The center boasts of well appointed rooms for inpatients with courteous and well trained staff looking after the needs. The rooms have internet access with in room cable TV for their comfort.
The centre has the state of the facility for X-rays, MRI CT etc., and is equipped with the latest equipment and OT which has been recognized by many organizations including JCIA. The Centre has state of the art facilities in the OT with Navigation, Robotics and Endoscopic facilities.
Procedures done at Spine Center SRU
Low back and neck pain are the commonest problems and majority of these are attended to by physicians specializing in pain management from the spine team various Epidural, Nerve root blocks and facet blocks.
Disc Prolapse
Patients with disabling disc prolapse not relieved by pain management undergo surgery for the problem. We do Endo Discectomy, Minimally Invasive Discectomy and Micro discectomy for these pts and they walk out of the hospital in a day
Lumbar canal Stenosis / Spondylolisthesis
Patients with these problems have very severe difficulty in walking and are bed ridden due to the difficulty in walking. These patients undergo laminectomy and stabilization procedures both by the open and Minimally Invasive techniques.
Scoliosis and Kyphosis
Otherwise called as Hunch back deformity the patient is bent over and have serious breathing and cosmetic issues. SRU spine center is one of the few centers in the entire country offering the latest techniques to correct the deformity and surgeons from all over visit the center to observe and learn the latest techniques.
Fractures
Spinal fractures can involve the neck or the back and can be devastating for the patient and the family. They could be paralyzed and bedridden. These patients undergo the latest treatment for the fractures by both open and minimally invasive methods. The centre is also conducting the latest research on Stem Cell therapy.
Osteoporotic fractures
Old age is a problem where people fall and have fractures of the spines. These are very painful and often crippling. These patients have magical relief of pain with percutaneous injection of cement called Vertebroplasty or Kyphoplasty under Local anaesthesia
Spinal Tumors
Complex cancers of the spine are treated by the latest methods in providing pain relief and care for these patients.
