OUTREACH ACTIVITIES
NATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR CONTROL OF BLINDNESS
Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness in India. The Department of Ophthalmology, SRIHER is doing its part in the eradication of blindness due to cataract by adopting 3 districts under NPCB program.
Frequent cataract screening camps are conducted in Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Vellore Districts and cataract surgeries are performed free of cost for these patients.
The procedures that are being done are extracapsular cataract extraction, small incision cataract surgery with rigid IOL implantation, phacoemulsification with foldable lens implantation. Other than cataract surgeries, pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft, dacryocystectomy, dacryocystorhinostomy, entropion, ectropion correction and squint surgeries are also done at affordable costs for patients screened from these camps.
Screening camps are also conducted in primary health centres. Ophthalmology department is also constantly a part of Multi-specialty camps held by the hospital throughout the State.
AWARENESS ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED IN THE DEPARTMENT
- Eye Donation Fortnight is conducted every year from 25th August to 8th September to promote eye donations and combat corneal blindness.
- Glaucoma Awareness Week is conducted in the week preceding Glaucoma Awareness day and promotes awareness and screens for this silent thief of sight.
