Shri NPV Ramasamy Udayar was born on September 19, 1936, in Rasipuram, Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu. His meteoric rise as an industrialist was driven by a keen business acumen, tireless dedication, and hard work. By the early 1980s, Mr. Udayar had established himself as a highly successful industrialist, earning the respect of colleagues and even the admiration of competitors. Despite his success, he harbored an unfulfilled aspiration—a desire to create something that would serve as a lasting benefit to the community. This vision ignited a relentless passion in his heart.
With the support and guidance of Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran, then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Udayar set out to fulfill his dream. This partnership laid the foundation for Tamil Nadu's first privately owned medical college, a significant milestone in the state's healthcare and education sectors.
On September 11, 1985, Sri Ramachandra Medical College (SRMC) was inaugurated in a modest two-storey building on Vembuliamman Street in Valasaravakkam, Chennai, with its first outpatient clinic housed in a makeshift shed. Over the following years, Mr. Udayar's unwavering dedication transformed 150 acres near Porur into a world-class medical campus.
In 1994, SRMC achieved a significant milestone by becoming a deemed university, marking the inception of a world-class tertiary care medical center. Under this foundation of hard work, new specialties blossomed, and the institution expanded its horizons by establishing programs in dentistry, nursing, and physiotherapy. Growth at SRMC was characterized not only by expansion but also by innovation, as seen in its pioneering allied health science programs and visionary initiatives in genetics, biotechnology, and informatics.
SRMC continued to break new ground with unique programs that advanced healthcare sciences, but its ambition didn't stop there. In July 1997, Shri N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar cemented an international partnership with Robert Crone, CEO of Harvard Medical International, which led to curriculum reform, student exchanges, and a renewed focus on healthcare quality, safety, leadership, and faculty development.
This partnership was a testament to SRMC’s commitment to building strong alliances, both locally and globally. After Mr. Udayar passed the torch in 1998, the institution's journey continued, growing steadily and occasionally taking leaps forward. Today, SRMC stands as one of the largest private healthcare infrastructures in India, with over 850+ faculty members, 12000+ students, and services impacting more than 3,500 patients daily. Through its telemedicine network, SRMC reaches over 10 centers across India, and through its international wing, SRHI, it extends its expertise globally.
