STEM CELL TRANSPLATATION

Stem Cell Transplantation Unit started in SRMC in the year 2007 by Life Cell (outsourcing). From 2001, it is managed by SRMC. We are doing both Adult and Paediatric Bone Marrow Transplant for the past 15 years. Initiated under the guidance of Dr.Krishnarathinam, Consultant Haematologist, the program is run by Dr. Krishnarathinam and Dr. Steve Thomas for Adult Patients and Dr.Dhaarani for Paediatric Patients (under the supervision of Dr.Julius Xavier Scott, HOD for Paedatric Haemato-Oncology).

The Process of Stem Cell Transplantation is duly supported by the Transfusion Medicine team, Critical Care Team, Laboratory Services, BMT Co-ordinator, Administrators, Voluntary Donors and Insurance Scheme Teams.

Both Autologous (Donor same as recipient) and Allogenic (Donor different than recipient) Bone Marrow Transplants have been carried out.

We have been able to successfully treat benign disorders (Thalassemia, Aplastic Anaemia and Malignant Disorders (Leukemia, Myeloma) with the Stem Cell Transplantation.

It usually involves collection of Stem Cells from Peripheral Blood after administration of Colony Stimulating factors followed by conditioning of patient to create space in Bone Marrow. The collected stem cells are reinfused to the patient in HEPA filtered and Positive Pressure Room.

We have also done advanced Procedures like Ex vivo T-Cell depletion to reduce the mortality and improve the outcomes. Being a treatment with heavy cost involved, we serve the patients through Government CMCHIS schemes, crowd funding and support from different organizations.

We have successfully done 90 transplants since 2018.
