Geriatric medicine is an innovative attempt in SRMC to address the problems unique to the older adults, be it physical, psychological, or social, associated with aging. It is as a one-stop centre for comprehensive care for individuals above the age of 65 in a multi-disciplinary setting. Any person above the age of 65 years can walk-in for the expert consultation and opinion in an outpatient setting as well as in-patient care for their acute medical problems.

GERIATRIC MEDICINE DEPARTMENT  has special focus on major geriatric problems like falls, urinary and bowel incontinence, memory loss  and instability.

Who can get benefit?

Elderly people ≥ 65 yrs. who are suffering from one or more of the following problems

1. Memory loss
2. Unclear or irrelevant talk
3. Unusual behavior, emotional disturbances
4. Lack of sleep.
5. Not stable while walking or frequent falling
6. Lack of urination control
7. Extreme tiredness, lack of strength
8. Weight loss and
9. Any other medical problem

• Promote ethical  research in the field of geriatrics and gerontology
• To provide comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation for the geriatric patients 
• To reach out the community for the needy geriatric population and strengthen the care for elderly at community level.

Scope of services

The department provides both Outpatient services and Inpatient services

The Out Patient Department is run on a daily basis, from 8 am to 3pm on all days except Sundays.  

Our scope of services include 

1.Performing  a comprehensive assessment of an older person, including mood and  cognition, gait, nutrition and fitness for surgery in out-patient, in-patient; and home  or community setting.

2. Diagnosing and managing acute illness in old age in out-patient, in-patient; and home  or community setting.

3. Diagnosing and managing chronic disease and disability in out-patient, in-patient; and home or community setting 

4. Providing    rehabilitation with the multidisciplinary team to  older patient in an  out-patient, in-patient; and home or community setting.
