About the Department

Renal Transplant services were started in 1995.We are pioneers to start Cadaver kidney Transplantation and organ sharing program voluntarily as early as in 1996. We have completed around 900 transplants which includes cadaveric transplants. We have voluntarily initiated the program of organ sharing within city hospitals as early as in 1995 when we sent a kidney to poor patient in Government General Hospital Chennai.

Our department is one of the largest centers for Cadaveric transplant in India. We for the first time utilized snake bite victims as successful renal donors in the country and to perform successful HIV renal transplant for first time in the country.

Clinical Focus :

Conditions Leading To Renal Transplant
When the kidneys stop working, the condition is referred to as ESRD(“end-stage renal disease”). Toxic waste products accumulate in the body and either dialysis or a kidney transplant is required to sustain life.
The most common causes of kidney failure include:

  • Malignant hypertension
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • Hypertensive nephrosclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Glomerular diseases
  • Renovascular and other vascular diseases
  • Congenital, familial and metabolic disorders
  • Tubular and interstitial diseases
  • Neoplasms

Renal replacement therapy (RRT) can be divided into dialysis (Hemodialysis and Peritoneal dialysis) and renal transplant. Although hemodialysis has improved the quality of life of ESRD patients but kidney transplant is a much better option for patients.
