About the Department

Inaugurated in 1993, the Department of Nuclear Medicine functions as a unit of radiology. We specialize in the usage of radioactive substances for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Many hospitals have a dedicated department for this purpose, often with a facility to prepare radiopharmaceuticals. You may be familiar with the other names used for the department, including the ‘Radioisotope Department’

Tests under our department are different from other imaging tests. Other tests are useful to examine a person’s anatomy, but nuclear imaging shows a person’s physiology. This helps us detect underlying physiological issues. The images from nuclear scans can be used together with images from CT or MRI scans. This is helpful for diagnosis, and the practice is referred to as image fusion.

In diagnosis, radioactive substances (radiopharmaceuticals) are administered to patients. Following this, a gamma camera is used to measure radiation, and form an image. Imaging may be referred to as radionuclide imaging or nuclear scintigraphy.

Other tests use probes to measure parts of the body. A counter may also be used to measure samples taken from the patient.

In therapy, radiopharmaceuticals are used to treat disease. They can also provide palliative pain relief. For example, Iodine-131 is used for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer.

Our Nuclear Medicine department conducts over 2,000 nuclear scans and therapies a year. We are a renowned center for Nuclear Medicine, and are supported by state-of-the-art facilities. This includes the sophisticated Dual Head Gamma Camera (Siemens Symbia EVO Excel). This tool is the first of its kind in India, and has been commissioned and installed in the department.

Features of Nuclear Medical Treatments:

  1. Procedures are non-invasive
  2. Procedures are generally non-allergic (care is taken to prevent/manage adverse reactions)
  3. Procedures are not done for pregnant patients

Scans/Therapies are conducted based on appointments.
